It’s a little hard to see, but the K-9's name is “Karma.” Nice to see the cops have a sense of humor. I guess.

There was a SWAT takedown not too far from my house a couple of weeks ago. It seems like they are being used more often, since more people are heavily armed and cops who knock on doors are getting shot .

Round Rock? You live literally right by my best friend of 9 years. He's also a car guy and I told him he should join Oppo one day or something. Don't worry, he's leagues less annoying than me.

Downtown RR?  I need a Round Rock donut now.

About a block away from RR Donuts, as a mater of fact. On my way back from RR Honda (see post ). I’d rather drive through downtown RR than sit on IH-35 through that perpetual  bottleneck.

I don’t come back often, but I thought it looked familiar enough. My parents are back every couple of months and they always bring back a couple dozen.

I’ll concede they may not be the “ best” donuts ever, but they are so tied to my youth they will always be my favorite .

I’m not much of a donut guy, since they give me bad indigestion. I don’t think I’ve ever had one. I usually go for the kolaches.

There was a story on NPR a while ago about excessive use of dogs to tear the living shit out of people, and they played some audio, and holy christ.

As usual the story revolved around law enforcement agencies being way too gung ho and perceiving everyone as a bad guy. And there were also many situations where the suspect surrendered and the officer continued to let the dog maul the shit out of the person, all while they’re literally screaming for their life.

It really put the K9 units in a new light.

There is a serious trend in policing now, at least in the US, where extreme or lethal force is the first recourse, not the last. I’m reminded of the video of the SC cop who calmly drew his gun on a fleeing suspect and shot him in the back eight times , when the cop was in no danger whatsoever. Contrast that with the video of the Toronto cop who talked down the guy who had just driven his van through a crowd and killed 10 people.

A lot of this has to do with policy. The DOD seems content to outfit law enforcement agencies with surplus weaponry that used to fight WARS. Not protect and serve, but to actively engage hostile enemies . And society as a whole seems to enjoy this. We’re all about our guns here in the US, so it makes sense that we must arm our local law enforcement to the teeth.

And then these officers have it drilled into their heads that everyone is out to kill them, when that clearly isn’t the case. It’s very sad, and I hate that’s where we are.

It’s so easy to buy military-grade armament in the US that the cops have to up-gun just to stay on par. The impetus to arm the cops with heavier arms began with the militants of the 70s, and the cops had access to tons of Vietnam surplus weaponry. This was the rise of the SWAT team, but it was still a small cadre of police who carried these weapons. But the drive to arm all cops came after the North Hollywood shooting , where cops with 9mm pistons and 38 revolvers were confronted by guys with fully automatic assault rifles. The cops had to raid gun stores to obtain equal firepower. And then 9/11 cemented the sight of militarized police in our cities, and we’ve not gone back.
